The Embassy Theatre – Movies Set in a Historic Beauty

Embassy Theatre Wellington

If you’re an advent movie goer this is the place to go.  Although there are many movie theatres scattered throughout Wellington this is a cut above the rest.  Built in 1924 originally as a silent film house of the 1920’s and 30’s, it was then refurbished in 2003 for the world premier of Peter Jackson’s "The Lord of the Rings- Return of the King".  Boasting a gorgeous lounge bar on the bottom floor, an impressive marble staircase up to the foyer where you get all your movie goodies, as well as another café and bar overlooking the busy Courtney Place Street.

The main auditorium has been re-done with a state of the art sound system and has premier leather seating at an extra cost; these seats each have the name of the actor or film crew who sat in those exact spots during the first showing of Return of the King.  This extravagant and elegant theatre will make for a memorable movie going experience. Make sure to take time to take in the décor and ambiance of the old theatre.

Notes

  • Tuesdays offer discounted tickets where you can get the premier seats for the same price as the normal seats
  • Make sure to check out the gorgeous bathrooms
  • The Roxy Theatre in Miramar just 15 minutes from town is another beautifully restored old style theatre, if you’re all movied out just pop in for a bite to eat or to just grab a coffee it’s quite pretty inside and last I was there they had some vintage stage costumes on display on the 2nd floor
